Purpose

To share some information from Waka Kotahi regarding the Over Height Detection System operating on SH20 Waterview Tunnel and SH1 Penrose Bridge.

Background

NZTA has released the attached update regarding the Over Height Detection System operating in Auckland for 2 key routes SH20 Waterview Tunnel and SH1 Penrose
The SH20 Waterview Tunnel system has been activated on average once per week.
SH1 Penrose bridge has unfortunately had over 50 strikes in the last decade

The publication advises location of Signage and the messaging hierarchy of alerts designed to avoid Over Height loads striking these key assets.

Impact of change

SH20 Waterview Tunnel
There is 3 instances starting with SH16 East and West bound where Over Height loads are identified and Warning signs are activated.

Further signage is activated at the Onramps to SH20 from both directions.
Final warnings are immediately prior to the Tunnel entrance warning of barrier closure.

SH1 Penrose Bridge

This also operates on a similar basis with warning signs advising detected Over Height Loads to take the next exit- and a Final warning to Stop now.

These systems have been in place for some time now and should eliminate these incidents occurring which inevitably causes significant disruption to all road users as well as significant consequences and costs for the driver and operator responsible.

It is imperative that drivers are fully aware of the dimensions of the loads they are carrying and if in any doubt should measure the load height if they have any concerns  before leaving the loading point of origin.
