The New Zealand Intermodal Transport Safety Group (NZITSG) is an industry sector group that we’ve played a significant role in supporting, particularly with the recent development of the Good Practice Guide: Safe Operation and Maintenance of Sideloaders (Good Practice Guide).
In my view no one appreciates the risks and challenges involved in operational activities better than the parties actually undertaking the task. The bottom line is that they’re the parties, or it’s their people, that are closest to the risk of being harmed or prosecuted and therefore they have the most skin in the game. These are the parties that are best leading how that risk should be managed and I think contemporary HSSE and international evidence supports this approach.
From a wider industry perspective we’ve been working hard, particularly in other sectors like livestock transport, to get greater recognition and appreciation of the risks our industry face from a system perspective. This is another great example of industry leading itself however, for us to be really successful it’s important that all parties in the supply chain play their part. In the case of ISO container movements it’s important that clients insist their transport providers are following the Good Practice Guide.”
